Step 1: Register a domain with a domain registrarRegister a Domain
If you are registering a domain based on a company name, personal name, or even a business and city name, then you are probably ready to search for and register your domain. Domain names are unique and therefore you will have to search to determine if your domain name is available. I recommend using NameCheap.com for domain registrations for several reasons. First, they have a great suggestion tool so that if the domain you search for isn’t found, you can easily locate other related domains that might work for you. They are also easy to transfer to another account, so if you happen to sell your website at a later time (also called flipping websites), then you will be able to easily transfer your domain to another account and then give that account to the person who purchases your domain and website. Namecheap has recently implemented 2-factor authentication to your domain account, which is a great security feature that allows you to receive a text message when logging into your account which is designed to protect you from hackers and account thieves. A single domain name can be worth hundreds, thousands, or even a million dollars or more, so Namecheap helps you by protecting your account with this type of authentication. Register for an account, which is free, by clicking the button above. The only part you have to pay for is the domain name itself, which runs about $10 and change for a year’s registration fee. Step 2: Get a Hosting AccountGet Hosting
A hosting account is the service you will need to purchase in order to have the files associated with your website to available to everyone to find on the internet. There are several hosting types available from different providers, but for most people hosting one website or even multiple websites, then you should probably choose a shared hosting account. This means that your website will be on a server with other websites and available for people to search for and find. A shared hosting plan is fine to start out with, and most people probably don’t need to spend any more than this level of hosting. The other hosting plans, such as VPS (virtual private server) or dedicated server, are more costly and are not necessary for beginning a website. You can always upgrade at a later time. I have tested several different hosts for different features, and the one that I have found to be to my liking is DreamHost.com. This service offers a shared hosting plan that you can get for as little as $8.99 per month at the time of this writing, if you are willing to pay in yearly installments. If you prefer to pay monthly, the cost is approximately $9.99 per month. DreamHost’s control panel that is associated to your account was built specifically for their hosting service, which means you won’t have a lot of things on the menus that you do not need. Other hosts that we have used in the past have a cluttered interface that makes it difficult to find what you need sometimes. Get more information on the Hosting account by clicking on the Hosting link at the top menu.
Step 3: Determine the format of your website
If you choose to create your website with software that resides on your computer, you can easily output your source files to your web server. Another very popular way to build a website fast is to use WordPress. This is the way that I recommend if you want to get your website put up fast and have it available for people to find quickly. It also allows you to add and change themes and plugins, which can quickly change the look and function of your website without a lot of complicated coding or changes to software. There are other options which are available but tend to have a steeper learning curve, therefore I do not recommend you start out with these other options if your goal is to make your own website fast and not spend a lot of time learning new software. WordPress is designed for ease of use and quick deployment, so I recommend you to use it and you will quickly learn it with my help from the tutorials and information I will post here.
